Sketching In Nature by Cathy Johnson

April 27th

This book has been in my backpack all summer long. It has been packed along with me and been a companion while I worked on my nature journal. I carried this book, my nature journal, my watercolor pencils, a small paintbrush, and my field guides with me just about everywhere I went.
What I loved about […]

Sketching Posture

April 23rd

I was traveling recently and again found myself with a 2 hour layover so of course it’s the perfect opportunity to pull out the ol’ sketchbook and start observing people. One thing I looked for were particular postures that conveyed a personality. On the left here is a woman who needed to move […]

For people into this little breakdown great, it’s going to be very
straightforward and cut to the heart of drawing different stuff. I am not going to
justify my opinions and I am not saying that this is the best, or even a good
way to learn. I’ll show you what […]

Sketching Stars

April 2nd

In this time of webcams and affordable CCD cameras, we tend to forget that sketching is a simple, portable way of recording astronomical objects, especially planets. Sketchbooks don’t require cables, batteries or power cords. They don’t care which operating system you use, or whether you have RS232 or firewire ports. They can still be read […]

Donato Ginacola on Sketching

March 28th

I think the most enjoyable part of working with artists is seeing the sketches. Although technically raw, the looseness and freedom in sketches add a lot of grace to the imagery — the ideas are fresh and immediate, implied without being spelled out. A heavy trick in illustration is making the final surpass the promise […]

Quick sketching-

March 27th

Here are some of my latest gesture sketches made from the café terrace as tourists & locals mill around.
They’re all 10 second quickies. I’m looking to capture gesture, expression & attitude through body shapes, posture & clothing. If I’m lucky sometimes I manage to capture character & that’s when they’re most successful […]

sketching away…

March 22nd

I haven’t sketched for a long time. The last sketch I made was this incomplete one a month back at CDSA while Anita Ma’am was sharing some f her wisdom with us… which I don’t remember at all…So, I wonder when I will end up sketching again…

closer than you know

March 13th

last night a whole crowd of us went to the bloor cinema for a double feature. the first movie was ‘in good company’ which was pretty good and the second movie, which was fantastic, was ‘closer’.
i don’t think i’ve ever seen a movie that has hit so close to home. […]

Sketching Night…

March 4th

As promised in the last post, I have tried to give justice to the feelings and thoughts that I experienced while and after reading “Night” by Elie Wiesel. There really aren’t words to attempt to describe it, and trying to do so might cheapen the impact that it had upon me. I […]

3-D Sketching

February 17th

I came across this link today: Sketching in Thin Air
Using video cameras and motion capture, the Front design group is able to “sketch” in three dimensions. The captured sketches can be fed into a digital prototyping system to produce a physical object.
